Crafter Spotlight: Marion Podue

Marion Podue

The Torrance Craftsmen’s Guild is privileged to have Marion Podue showcase his unique craft of paper models. Marion has been making his paper models for over 13 years and has been a TCG member for over 10 years. His models have won awards at the LA County Fair.

Q: How did you start making these models?
It all started when Marion was running a raffle for fun at work. He would roll the prizes up in tubes of newspaper which his co-workers would buy for a dollar each.  He started to build things out of these tubes of newspaper and a unique craft was born!

Q: What is your favorite material to work with?
He favors the LA Times classified section and the comics section for color. He also uses cardboard and brown paper.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Many people see his creations and make suggestions of what they would like to see. With Marion’s background in architecture, he can visualize how to build many structures, and besides buildings he creates airplanes, vehicles and yes, even machine guns.

Q: Do you sell your crafts at other shows or venues (online shops)?
Marion only sells his creations at the TCG Fall faire, so make plans to see him when you are there. Each creation is signed with his nickname “GERM”, a small hand-drawn self portrait, and the date of the piece.

Q: Any advice for someone starting out in crafting?
“Enjoy what you do”.
